Remi Tinubu commissions schools, nursing quarters in Borno

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, on Monday inaugurated newly completed nursing quarters and two mega primary schools in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, in a move aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and expanding access to quality education.

The projects, executed under the administration of Governor Babagana Zulum, underscore ongoing efforts to enhance critical infrastructure across the state’s health and education sectors.

The nursing quarters, located adjacent to the State Specialist Hospital, comprise eight blocks of six flats each. The fully furnished units are equipped with air-conditioning systems to improve the welfare and retention of healthcare personnel.

In the education sector, the First Lady commissioned the Aliyakeri and Abbaganaram Mega Primary Schools, each designed with 48 classrooms to accommodate a large pupil population. The facilities also feature ICT centres, e-learning platforms, modern sports amenities and solar-powered systems to ensure uninterrupted learning.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mrs Tinubu commended Governor Zulum’s development-driven approach, describing the projects as impactful and responsive to the needs of residents.

She noted that the administration’s focus on social infrastructure was yielding visible results, adding that she was honoured to participate in the commissioning.

The state government disclosed that over 100 mega schools have been completed across Borno, with additional projects underway in all 27 local government areas.

As part of the visit, the First Lady also flagged off a ₦200 million empowerment programme targeting 2,000 vulnerable women. Each beneficiary is to receive ₦100,000 and a sewing machine to support small-scale enterprises and boost household income.

She described the initiative as consistent with broader national efforts to promote economic inclusion, community resilience and food security.

Under the distribution plan, beneficiaries were drawn from across the state, including Maiduguri metropolis, Jere, Biu and other local government areas.

In recognition of excellence in the education sector, eight outstanding personnel—including teachers, principals and technical education coordinators—were presented with utility vehicles.

In a related development, Governor Zulum presented a house to a ministry staff member, Baba Modu Fandi, in appreciation of his service, while the First Lady further supported him with a cash donation of ₦2 million.
