Nigerian Army denies allegations of property acquisition by Chief of Logistics

The Nigerian Army has responded to recent claims made by Sahara Reporters, alleging that Major General Erema Akerejola, the Chief of Logistics (Army), acquired a million-dollar property in the United States through proceeds from contract scams. The military institution expressed its concern over what it perceives as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public through a smear campaign.

In an official statement, the Nigerian Army clarified that the property in question was acquired 12 years ago through monthly mortgage payments. Mrs. Akerejola, who has resided and worked in the United States for the past 19 years, continues to make the mortgage payments. The army emphasized the need to address these allegations due to its commitment to transparency and accountability.

The statement refuted insinuations suggesting that the property owner hails from a poor background, asserting that such claims undermine the hard work of Nigerians who have achieved success despite challenging circumstances. Major General Akerejola assumed the position of Chief of Logistics only six months ago, while the property was acquired more than a decade ago.

The Nigerian Army accused the report of intentional vagueness, omitting crucial details such as the acquisition year to sensationalize the story. The statement criticized the lack of evidence provided by Sahara Reporters, citing unnamed sources whose credibility remains questionable.

The Army suggested that the online media’s motive behind the publication appears to be stirring disaffection within its ranks. It affirmed the military’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and zero tolerance for corruption or fraudulent activities.

Expressing regret over the unfounded allegations against Major General Akerejola, the statement highlighted his distinguished record of service and unwavering professionalism throughout his career. The Nigerian Army called for caution among the public, urging against the spread of false information that could tarnish the reputation of dedicated individuals in its service.

The statement concluded by encouraging the media to uphold professionalism by disseminating accurate and verified information. It emphasized the Nigerian Army’s commitment to its mission of protecting the nation’s territorial integrity and serving as a force for good. The institution pledged to investigate any allegations of wrongdoing within its ranks and take appropriate actions in accordance with the law. Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, reaffirmed the Army’s dedication to upholding the trust placed in it by the Nigerian people. The statement was issued on December 13, 2023.
