ActionAid urges urgent steps to secure Nigerian Children’s future

On the occasion of Children’s Day 2025, ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) has called for immediate and coordinated action to address the worsening plight of Nigerian children and secure their future.

Speaking in Abuja, Country Director Andrew Mamedu described the condition of Nigerian children as “alarming and untenable,” warning that rising insecurity, poverty, and digital exclusion are creating a crisis that demands urgent attention.

“Despite the day’s celebratory tone, the reality for many Nigerian children is grim,” Mamedu said. “Millions are trapped in cycles of poverty, conflict, and neglect. We must move beyond rhetoric and take bold, concrete action to ensure their safety, education, and development.”

Mamedu cited UNICEF figures showing over 18 million children out of school, with girls disproportionately affected by poverty, insecurity, and gender norms. He also noted that ongoing violence in the northeast and northwest has displaced thousands, leaving children exposed to trauma and interrupted education.

Digital inequality is another major concern, with only 36% of Nigerians having internet access and 78% of youths lacking digital literacy. Coupled with inflation and rising food costs, which could leave 33 million Nigerians food insecure in 2025, the situation places immense strain on vulnerable families.

“To truly unlock the potential of Nigerian children, we must address implementation gaps in education, healthcare, and social protection,” Mamedu said. He urged all stakeholders—including government, civil society, and the private sector—to invest in inclusive education, child protection systems, and digital infrastructure.

ActionAid Nigeria stressed that protecting children is not only a moral duty but a strategic investment in the nation’s future peace and prosperity.
