Air Marshal Abubakar assumes AAAF chairmanship, calls for stronger African security collaboration

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has assumed the Chairmanship of the Association of African Air Forces (AAAF), emphasizing the need for African-led solutions to the continent’s security challenges.

In a statement Director, Public Relations and Information Headquarters Nigerian Air Force Air Vice Marshal Olusola F. Akinboyewa said speaking at the African Air Chiefs’ Symposium in Zambia from February 16–22, 2025, Air Marshal Abubakar highlighted the importance of regional collaboration, strategic partnerships, and technological advancements in strengthening Africa’s airpower capabilities. He stressed that enhanced cooperation among African Air Forces is essential for addressing threats such as terrorism, insurgency, and transnational crime.

“Our collaboration is a powerful reminder of the importance of finding African solutions to African problems,” he stated, reaffirming his commitment to advancing the AAAF’s objectives. He outlined key priorities for his tenure, including the full operationalization of the Association and the expansion of Africa-led Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) operations. He also assured members of Nigeria’s dedication to delivering a successful African Air Chiefs’ Symposium in 2026.

His appointment as AAAF Chairman underscores Nigeria’s leadership role in regional security and the Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF) growing capabilities.

Meanwhile, following the success of the 2024 African Air Forces Forum (AAF) in Abuja, Nigeria has been selected to host the 4th edition of the event in Lagos from May 21–23, 2025. Themed “Strengthening Collaborations in Advanced Aerospace Technologies for Enhanced National and Regional Security,” the forum will bring together Air Chiefs, defence experts, and industry leaders to explore cutting-edge aerospace innovations and their role in bolstering security across Africa.

This marks a historic milestone, as Nigeria becomes the first country to host the AAF for two consecutive editions, reinforcing the NAF’s influence in regional airpower discussions.
