In a recent development, Amnesty International has called upon Nigerian authorities to take decisive actions and ensure accountability for the brutal killing of 37 individuals, which included 20 mourners returning from the burial of victims of a prior attack by the extremist group, Boko Haram.
This plea comes in the wake of alarming reports detailing the heinous acts committed by Boko Haram militants during these violent raids, which include indiscriminate killings of those attempting to flee, sexual assault against women, looting of essential resources such as grains, livestock, money, and other valuables.
The international human rights organization in a post on its social media page strongly condemned Boko Haram’s continuous cycle of violence, abductions, and looting, underscoring the urgent need for this cycle to come to an end. Boko Haram has left a trail of devastation and suffering in the lives of millions of people in northeastern Nigeria since 2009.
The armed group’s actions have resulted in the deaths of thousands, the abduction of hundreds, rape of women and girls, and the forced displacement of approximately 2.2 million individuals from their homes.
Amnesty International’s call for accountability underscores the necessity of holding the perpetrators of these grave crimes responsible and providing justice to the victims. The organization’s stance serves as a reminder of the imperative need to address the security and humanitarian crisis that has plagued the region for far too long.
