In a significant development on Thursday, November 2, 2023, the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, convened a critical assembly of political leaders and relevant stakeholders at the prestigious Rockview Hotel in Owerri.
According to Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the primary agenda of this gathering was to deliberate on pressing election security matters, emphasizing the need for secure elections and the safety of all citizens during the electoral process.
The meeting featured comprehensive discussions encompassing police deployment strategies, the assurance of secure elections, and the safeguarding of the rights of every member of the public. It served as a pivotal platform for the Inspector General of Police to reaffirm the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to establish a secure environment for voters and all participants in the electoral process.
IGP Egbetokun underscored the rigorous training received by police officers assigned to election monitoring, highlighting their responsibility to ensure robust security at polling units while safeguarding the fundamental rights of the public. This commitment aligns with the NPF’s dedication to upholding democratic principles. The Inspector General called upon all political parties to engage in constructive dialogue and promote a peaceful atmosphere during the election period to foster a harmonious and peaceful environment conducive to a credible and successful electoral process.
In his address, the Inspector General of Police stressed the vital importance of instilling confidence in the NPF’s professionalism, impartiality, and its commitment to non-interference in the electoral process. The primary objective of the police, as he emphasized, is to ensure a safe and peaceful environment for elections. Stakeholders received assurances that the security of all citizens remains a top priority, and the police will exert diligent efforts to preserve peace and protect the electoral process from any disruptions.
Distinguished attendees at the meeting included the Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Chief Mike Okiro (IGP Rtd.), Chairpersons of Eight Political Parties, Traditional Rulers led by His Royal Majesty Eze Dr. EC Okeke, CFR, the Eze-Imo of Imo State, the Imo State Resident Electoral Commission, religious leaders, Heads of Security Agencies in Imo State, members of the Civil Society, Youths, and Student Groups.
IGP Egbetokun issued a stern warning to individuals and groups contemplating actions that could disrupt the elections, affirming that police officers have been instructed to take decisive measures against anyone involved in unlawful activities undermining the electoral process. He also reiterated prohibitions against the use of VIP escorts, sirens, and illegal movements on election day.
