Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Nigerian authorities to urgently secure the immediate and safe release of Augustine Madubiya, a 23-year-old Economics student at the Federal University Birnin Kebbi, who was abducted by gunmen on April 8, 2025.
According to the organization, Augustine was specifically targeted during the attack, which occurred at an off-campus student accommodation. The incident also claimed the life of a local resident, Malam Siddi Hussaini, who was killed during the assault.
Amnesty International Nigeria warned that the continued threat of abductions in parts of northern Nigeria is undermining the right to education, as fear of kidnapping drives many students to abandon their studies.
“The Nigerian authorities must take immediate steps to prevent these abductions and bring those responsible to justice,” the statement read. “Time is running out for the government to fulfill its legal obligation to protect lives.”
The organization reiterated its call for the government to act decisively to end the cycle of violence targeting students and educational institutions
