ECOWAS @50: Media remains a pillar of democracy, peace, and security – Touray

  • Unveils seven-member jury for maiden media excellence award

As part of activities marking its 50th anniversary, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reaffirmed the pivotal role of the media in advancing regional integration, democracy, peace, and development. The organization also unveiled a seven-member jury for its inaugural ECOWAS Journalistic Excellence Award.

Established in May 1975, ECOWAS was founded as a regional economic bloc to promote trade, integration, and the free movement of people across West Africa. As it celebrates its Golden Jubilee, ECOWAS is instituting several commemorative activities, among which the media award takes center stage.

Speaking at the official unveiling of the award jury, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, emphasized the media’s enduring contribution to the progress of the sub-region. Represented by Mr. Mambury Njie, his Special Advisor on Economic and Financial Integration and Partnerships, Touray described the media as a steadfast partner in ECOWAS’ five-decade journey. “Over the last 50 years, the media has remained a vital partner in promoting democracy, good governance, peace and security, regional integration, and the overall development of the West African community,” Touray said.

“As we commemorate this milestone, it is both appropriate and essential to recognize and celebrate journalists who have shaped public discourse, championed regional causes, and amplified the aspirations of our citizens.”

He noted that the ECOWAS Media Excellence Award is not merely a celebration of outstanding journalistic work, but a reaffirmation of the regional body’s commitment to fostering a free, professional, and responsible media ecosystem. “Journalists in West Africa are not simply chroniclers of events; they are educators, mentors, and nation builders. In an era marked by the rapid spread of misinformation, we must uphold and honour those who report with integrity, accuracy, and courage.”

Dr. Touray also charged members of the jury to uphold the highest standards in the selection process, emphasizing fairness, objectivity, and consistency. “These awards are more than accolades—they are a legacy. A legacy we are building for the next 50 years of ECOWAS. That legacy begins with your commitment to identifying and celebrating the very best in West African journalism.”

The Director of Communications at the ECOWAS Commission, Mr. Joel Ahofodji, noted that the award spans five categories: print, television, radio, online journalism, and photography. He emphasized that the initiative is designed to recognize journalists who have contributed to shaping narratives about ECOWAS and reporting on its programs and activities. “Our ambition is to institutionalize this award as an annual event. We aim to build stronger ties with the media and encourage deeper engagement with ECOWAS’ initiatives, especially those that impact the lives of citizens across the region.”

The seven-member jury is chaired by renowned Gambian journalist and academic, Professor Abdoulie Gassama. Other members include:

  • Dr. Adrienne Diop – Senegal

  • Paul Douakoutche – Benin Republic

  • Ms. Filomena Silva – Cape Verde

  • Bamba Mafoumgbe – Côte d’Ivoire

  • Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal – Ghana

  • Mrs. Yemi Kolapo – Nigeria

In his remarks, Prof. Gassama assured the Commission of the jury’s readiness to conduct a thorough and impartial assessment of submissions. “We are tasked with identifying and celebrating journalists who have demonstrated exceptional skill, creativity, and commitment. Our diverse backgrounds will ensure a well-rounded, inclusive, and transparent selection process.”

The ECOWAS Journalistic Excellence Award underscores the organization’s enduring belief in the media as a cornerstone of democracy and a catalyst for regional transformation.
