Amnesty International has expressed deep concern over escalating threats against activists exposing alleged grave human rights violations at the Tiger Base police detention facility in Owerri, Imo State.
In a statement, the global human rights organisation said the latest target of such threats is human rights lawyer, Chinedu Agu, who has reportedly faced a series of violations linked solely to his advocacy and activism. Amnesty warned that the continued intimidation places the safety and security of activists at serious risk and could undermine efforts to hold perpetrators accountable.
The organisation stressed that human rights defenders play a critical role in documenting abuses and promoting justice, noting that threats and reprisals against them violate international human rights standards.
Amnesty International called on the Government of Nigeria to urgently fulfil its obligations under international human rights law by ensuring the protection of activists and providing a safe and enabling environment for them to carry out their legitimate work without fear of harassment or violence.
