Amnesty International has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently prioritize the protection of lives, warning that escalating insecurity is leaving millions of Nigerians feeling increasingly unsafe.
At least 54 people were killed this week in separate attacks across Benue, Borno, Kwara, and Zamfara states, with more victims abducted or displaced. The organization noted that the Nigerian government is failing to protect citizens as gunmen continue to carry out attacks with impunity.
In Benue and Plateau states, armed groups have been slaughtering residents, sacking villages, and razing farming communities. In parts of Sokoto, Zamfara, and Katsina states, bandits are enforcing brutal rules and collecting levies at gunpoint.
Amnesty International criticized the Tinubu administration for lacking an effective strategy to end years of armed violence. “The latest attacks reveal a disturbing reality: gunmen are operating with near-total freedom, while government security measures are proving ineffective,” the organization stated.
Highlighting the dire situation, Amnesty said the government’s apparent deprioritization of security has left communities living in constant fear. “After every attack, more attacks follow. People have been abandoned to their fate,” it said.
Amnesty International described the government’s continued failure to protect lives and property as “completely unacceptable,” urging immediate and decisive action to restore safety across the country.
