Army raids IPOB/ESN camps, recovers IED, ransom cash

Troops of the Nigerian Army have intensified operations against suspected strongholds of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), recording fresh gains in the South-East.

The operations, conducted under Operation EASTERN SANITY, targeted locations in Enugu State on April 14, 2026, with military authorities reporting the dismantling of camps and recovery of weapons and suspected ransom proceeds.

According to the Army, troops of Sector 1, supported by the Air Component of Operation UDO KA, carried out a coordinated clearance operation in Ajali Forest, located in Ezeagu Local Government Area. The operation reportedly forced suspected IPOB/ESN fighters to retreat, abandoning equipment including an improvised explosive device (IED), believed to be anti-tank in nature.

The device was subsequently secured by an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, preventing potential casualties among both security personnel and civilians.

Military authorities said troops have since consolidated control of the area, continuing clearance operations aimed at dismantling hideouts and logistics bases used by the group.

In a separate operation the same day, troops of 82 Division Garrison deployed at Adani in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, acting on intelligence provided by the Department of State Services (DSS), intercepted suspected ransom funds linked to a kidnapping syndicate.

The operation led to the arrest of a suspect described as a key member of the gang. Items recovered from the individual’s residence included a pump-action rifle and a sum of ₦2 million, believed to be proceeds of kidnapping.

The suspect and recovered items have been handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation, with efforts ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the network.

The Army stated that the combined operations have further weakened the operational and financial capacity of IPOB/ESN elements in the region.

Reaffirming its commitment to restoring security, the Nigerian Army urged residents to continue supporting ongoing efforts, assuring that operations would be sustained to protect lives and property and ensure lasting peace across the South-East.
