Awolowo House demolished, to be rebuilt as ICT hub

The historic Awolowo House in Ikeja, Lagos, has been pulled down to make way for the construction of the Awolowo Technology Mall (A.T Mall), a modern facility designed to serve as a hub for global and local information technology companies.

The building, originally erected in 1978 and managed by Wemabod, a subsidiary of Odu’a Investment Company Limited owned by the six South-West states, had long been a landmark symbol of innovation. Its replacement, the A.T Mall, will more than double the commercial space from 4,800 sqm to over 9,000 sqm.

Speaking on the rationale behind the redevelopment, the Managing Director of El-Salem Nigeria Limited, Mr. Ben Gbade Ojo, said the new technology mall will become a hub where leading ICT firms establish offices, showcase products, train talents, and provide solutions to digital challenges.

“Whatever technology products or services you are in need of, come to A.T Mall, Ikeja, and you will get them,” Ojo assured, describing the facility as Nigeria’s one-stop destination for cutting-edge ICT solutions.

The project also aims to immortalize the legacy of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, renowned nationalist and advocate of innovation and knowledge.

The development comes as Lagos was recently ranked by Statisense, a global data analytics firm, as the world’s fastest-growing emerging technology ecosystem in 2025, ahead of Istanbul, Pune, and other global cities.

Analysts believe the A.T Mall, already attracting interest from world-class tech companies, will further consolidate Lagos’ position as Africa’s leading technology hub.
