Clean communities key to ending open defecation

Efforts to end open defecation in the Federal Capital Territory are gaining momentum as ongoing sensitisation campaigns in Kwali Area Council continue to promote healthy hygiene practices, safe sanitation, and community participation.

The awareness sessions, which bring together families and community members, are aimed at educating residents on the dangers of poor sanitation and the need to protect children from preventable diseases linked to unhygienic environments.

The initiative is being implemented under an integrated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and health project supported by the China EXIM Bank. The programme focuses on improving access to clean water, strengthening sanitation facilities, and encouraging healthier living conditions across communities.

Stakeholders involved in the project noted that sustained public engagement and community action remain critical to achieving an open defecation-free society and reducing the spread of waterborne diseases.

According to project coordinators, every sensitisation session, community meeting, and hygiene campaign represents another step toward building cleaner, safer, and healthier communities for children and families in the FCT.
