Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (CoAS), has made his presence felt in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state. He is embarking on an operational tour aimed at assessing the security situation and bolstering the ongoing counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency efforts carried out by the Joint Task Force Operation HADIN KAI troops in the North East Theatre of Operations.
As reported by Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, the Army Chief arrived in the theatre on the night of Thursday, August 31, 2023. Upon his arrival, he received a comprehensive briefing from Major General Golden Chibuisi, the Theatre Commander. This briefing covered various aspects, including the current security landscape in the North East, the ongoing operational endeavors to eliminate terrorist strongholds in the Lake Chad region and the Mandara mountains, as well as the challenges faced by the forces.
The CoAS commended the troops for their operational successes up to this point. He highlighted the emergence of new tactics employed by the terrorists, including abductions for ransom, looting for resources, and targeting civilians with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). In response to these evolving threats, he assured that combat enablers would be provided to enhance ongoing operations and further solidify stability in the region.
Nwachukwu emphasized that the Nigerian Army will continue to provide updates as the CoAS continues his operational tour of the North East Theatre of Operations.
