Justice Maryanne Anineh of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Maitama, Abuja, on Monday admitted additional documentary exhibits tendered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Ifeanyi Emefiele, over the alleged unlawful redesign of the naira.
The exhibits, which included certified copies of newspaper publications from The Punch, ThisDay, Vanguard, Daily Sun and The Nation, were presented through the eighth prosecution witness, Jegede Oluwasegun, an official of the National Library of Nigeria.
Led in evidence by prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, the witness also tendered payment receipts for the purchase of the newspapers containing reports relating to the alleged unlawful naira redesign.
Oyedepo told the court that the documents were produced in response to a motion filed by the defence on March 31, 2026, requesting the prosecution to provide all press releases and newspaper publications concerning the alleged offences.
The documents were admitted in evidence without objection from defence counsel, Olalekun Ojo, SAN.
During cross-examination, Oluwasegun told the court that his responsibilities at the National Library were limited to attending to information requests and certifying newspaper documents.
He stated that he neither authored the publications nor possessed knowledge of their contents beyond the certification process.
Emefiele is being prosecuted by the EFCC on a four-count charge bordering on the alleged unlawful printing and redesign of naira notes during his tenure as CBN governor.
