Court jails two men for 40 years over fake alcohol production in Lagos

The Federal High Court of Nigeria has convicted two men for the production and distribution of adulterated and unregistered alcoholic beverages in Lagos, sentencing them to a combined 40-year term of imprisonment.

The convicts, Otuorimuno Nelson Aziakpono, 58, and Ikegwuonu Davidson Ikechukwu, 28, were found guilty on eight counts bordering on the manufacture, possession, sale and distribution of counterfeit alcoholic products, contrary to applicable regulatory and public health laws.

Their conviction followed a December 3, 2025 enforcement operation carried out at Kojo Street, Ijanikin, and Vespa Market in Lagos. During the raid, officials recovered counterfeit and unregistered variants of globally recognised brands, including Hennessy, Jameson Irish Whiskey, William Lawson’s and Gordon’s.

Authorities said the seized products were unwholesome, misleadingly packaged and unsafe for human consumption, posing significant risks to public health.

In a statement, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and curbing the proliferation of adulterated alcoholic beverages in the country. The agency warned of the dangers associated with the consumption of fake alcohol and pledged to intensify enforcement operations nationwide.

NAFDAC also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious products or activities to its nearest office.
