The Edo State Government has swiftly activated an emergency public health response to contain a recent outbreak of diphtheria in parts of the state.
Under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, the state has deployed critical medical resources and personnel to mitigate the spread of the disease. The Governor is personally overseeing surveillance and coordination efforts in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and key stakeholders.
In a statement, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo Owaen Fred Itua said statewide interventions currently in progress include the procurement and rollout of life-saving vaccines, with a focus on children and other vulnerable groups. Public awareness campaigns have been intensified across radio, television, social media, and community outreach to educate residents on diphtheria symptoms, prevention, and the importance of early treatment.
Hospitals have been placed on high alert, with directives to enhance case detection, isolation, and clinical management in line with national and WHO protocols. Medical personnel are being trained and equipped, while surveillance systems have been expanded to trace potential contacts.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, is leading the frontline medical response alongside an emergency task force. The government is also working closely with school administrators to enforce hygiene standards and carry out health screenings to protect schoolchildren.
In a coordinated effort, Governor Okpebholo has convened a multi-sectoral emergency meeting with representatives from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the World Health Organization (WHO), traditional leaders, civil society, and community groups to unify the state’s response strategy.
While assuring residents that the situation is under control, the government urges the public to remain calm, report any suspicious symptoms to nearby health facilities, and cooperate with health officials during the vaccination campaign.
The Edo State Government reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring a swift resolution to the outbreak.
