Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA), has unequivocally stated that there are no intentions whatsoever to initiate an impeachment process against the State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu. Agbebaku urged the people of Edo to dismiss the rumors circulating about the alleged impeachment orchestrated by the State Assembly.
These clarifications were provided by Agbebaku on a Friday during a visit by the 24 Assembly members to the Government House in Benin City, where they met with State Governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki.
Agbebaku expressed, “Our purpose for being here is to dispel the rumors concerning the potential impeachment of Edo State’s Deputy Governor. I want to firmly convey to the citizens of Edo State that there is no basis to these claims within the State House of Assembly. At no point did the governor contact me to mandate an impeachment against the Deputy Governor. The notion of impeachment has emerged from completely baseless origins. Today, I wish to assure the people of Edo that neither now nor in the foreseeable future has the governor approached me to advocate for the impeachment of the deputy governor.”
Continuing, the Speaker elaborated, “Upon approaching the governor, he inquired if any such matter was in motion. He questioned the purpose behind this supposed impeachment. I confirmed that no such plans existed. There is no ongoing endeavor of this nature. Furthermore, I personally reached out to the Deputy Governor to convey that there is no active intention within the Assembly to pursue impeachment; what he has heard is mere unfounded hearsay.”
Agbebaku emphasized, “Presently, I want to stress to the residents of Edo State that the narrative about the Deputy Governor’s impeachment is nothing more than unfounded gossip. The governor holds no intentions in this regard today, tomorrow, or in perpetuity; such plans are non-existent.”
He also added, “This marks our second courtesy call to you, Governor. Our presence is a reminder of the pledges made during our initial visit. We stand firmly committed to following your lead and ensuring the successful continuation of your initiatives. As representatives of our respective constituencies, it is our duty to provide you with the support needed to accomplish your objectives with strength and resolve. I extend gratitude for your perseverance and for addressing the media amidst these rumors; however, our priority lies in the contentment of the people of Edo. We are here to stand beside you, ensuring you conclude your term on a high note. The entire EDHA membership is united in our determination to bolster your accomplishments, setting a positive example for Edo State.”
Governor Godwin Obaseki expressed his administration’s unwavering commitment to sustaining the State’s developmental progress, unaffected by distractions, in order to deliver the promises of democracy to the Edo populace. He stated, “Our accomplishments within Edo have been significant. The global spotlight should be cast upon our positive endeavors, rather than on turmoil or upheaval. My gratitude extends to the Speaker and the Assembly members for their visit, signifying solidarity. The challenges ahead demand our full attention, and I am resolute in evading any diversions.”
He continued, “Edo is not in turmoil. Our government remains steadfast. The EDHA functions smoothly. Those who thrive on turmoil, create it, or broadcast it should not be granted footholds here. Our primary concern should be the deteriorating state of federal roads within our region, causing severe hindrances to movement. This issue commands our focus as Edo citizens. Turmoil mirrors a state of conflict, limiting our internal mobility. With extensive federal roads in disrepair, we find ourselves almost isolated, both within our State and in the nation at large.”
The Governor concluded, “We must confront this reality and apprise our citizens of it. Our strenuous efforts are directed at resolving this challenge and fostering internal growth.
