In a decisive move against cybercrime, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) deployed operatives from the Benin Zonal Command to conduct a targeted operation on Friday, May 3, 2024, resulting in the apprehension of 20 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud within various locations in Sapele, Delta State.
The operation, meticulously planned and executed, followed extensive intelligence-gathering efforts that pinpointed the activities of the alleged perpetrators. Acting swiftly on this intelligence, EFCC operatives swooped in on the identified locations, ensuring the swift and effective apprehension of the suspects.
Among the seized items were 12 high-end vehicles, reflective of the lavish lifestyle often associated with cybercrime, along with numerous laptops and mobile phones suspected to have been used in the commission of fraudulent activities.
This operation underscores the EFCC’s unwavering commitment to combatting cybercrime and safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s digital space. The agency continues to leverage advanced investigative techniques and collaborations with relevant stakeholders to identify and apprehend individuals involved in fraudulent cyber activities.
Following their apprehension, the suspects are currently undergoing thorough interrogation and investigation to gather further evidence and establish the extent of their involvement in cyber-related crimes. Once investigations are concluded, the EFCC intends to pursue legal action against the suspects, ensuring that justice is served and deterrence is upheld.
This latest development serves as a stern warning to would-be cybercriminals, emphasizing the serious consequences awaiting those who engage in illicit activities online. The EFCC remains resolute in its mission to rid the nation of cybercrime and uphold the principles of integrity, transparency, and accountability in the digital sphere.
