The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Benin Zonal Directorate, has arrested 47 individuals suspected of engaging in internet-related fraud in Edo State, recovering a pump-action rifle, live cartridges, vehicles, and other valuables during the operation.
The coordinated sting operation, carried out on Friday, August 15, 2025, followed credible intelligence reports linking the suspects to a network of online criminal activities, including romance scams, identity theft, and fraudulent financial transactions.
During the raid, operatives discovered a pump-action rifle with live ammunition in the possession of one of the suspects. Other recovered items included six vehicles, numerous mobile phones, and several laptop computers believed to have been used to perpetrate the alleged crimes.
According to EFCC officials, the arrests form part of the Commission’s sustained crackdown on cybercrime across the country. “We remain committed to dismantling criminal syndicates operating both online and offline. The recovery of an illegal firearm from one of the suspects also underscores the dangerous dimension of this criminal enterprise,” a senior operative stated.
The EFCC confirmed that the suspects are currently in custody and undergoing interrogation. Upon the conclusion of investigations, they will face prosecution in court.
The Commission urged members of the public to remain vigilant and to report suspicious online activities, noting that community intelligence remains critical to the fight against cybercrime.
This development comes as the EFCC intensifies nationwide efforts to curb the rising menace of internet fraud, which continues to undermine the country’s image and financial security.
