EFCC detains 14 FUTA undergraduates, 19 others over suspected internet fraud

In a decisive operation, the Benin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended fourteen undergraduates from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, alongside nineteen additional individuals. The arrests occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, February 14, 2024, on suspicion of involvement in internet-related crimes.

The suspects were taken into custody at various residential locations within the Akure metropolis, following intelligence reports concerning their alleged illicit activities. The sting operation, orchestrated by EFCC operatives, was prompted by repeated pleas from concerned neighbors and parents in the area, seeking intervention to prevent their children from falling prey to the allure of internet-related offenses promoted by the suspects.

Among the items seized during the arrests were ten luxury cars, mobile phones, laptops, and a motorcycle, all believed to be linked to the suspects’ illegal activities.

As investigations proceed, the detained individuals will remain in EFCC custody until conclusive evidence is gathered. Subsequently, they will face charges in court, as part of the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat cybercrime and uphold the law.

The EFCC continues to prioritize the enforcement of cybersecurity measures and the prosecution of individuals engaged in fraudulent online activities. Through collaborative efforts with law enforcement agencies and communities, the commission remains vigilant in its mission to safeguard citizens from financial exploitation and uphold the integrity of the digital landscape.
