EFCC nabs 23 suspected internet fraudsters in Ibadan

Operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have arrested 23 individuals suspected of engaging in internet fraud, commonly known as “Yahoo Yahoo.”

The suspects were apprehended during a targeted operation in the Akobo area of Ibadan, Oyo State. The arrests followed actionable intelligence that linked the individuals to fraudulent online activities aimed at defrauding unsuspecting victims.

During the operation, EFCC agents confiscated various items suspected to have been acquired through illicit means. The recovered assets included eight luxury vehicles, a collection of laptops, numerous mobile phones, and a PlayStation gaming console.

The EFCC emphasized its commitment to combating cybercrime, describing the operation as part of ongoing efforts to rid society of financial fraudsters. The agency also reassured the public of its dedication to following due process.

“The suspects are currently undergoing further investigation,” an EFCC spokesperson stated. “They will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”

The crackdown aligns with the EFCC’s broader campaign against internet fraud and related crimes, which have been on the rise in recent years, particularly among young individuals. The agency continues to urge the public to report suspicious activities and assist law enforcement in curbing the menace of cybercrime in Nigeria.

The arrests have sparked conversations on social media, with many Nigerians commending the EFCC’s efforts while others call for stiffer penalties to deter such activities.
