Tuggar advocates peace, stability at ECOWAS security council session

Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chair of the Mediation and Security Council (MSC) of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has urged governments and citizens across West Africa to prioritize peace and political stability as the foundation for regional development.

Speaking at the 53rd MSC Session at the Ministerial level in Abuja on Thursday, Tuggar highlighted the pressing challenges facing the region. He emphasized that without stability, aspirations for prosperity and progress would remain unattainable. “We must strengthen governance frameworks and promote inclusive, peaceful political transitions,” he remarked.

The Minister commended Ghana and Senegal for conducting successful elections, describing them as benchmarks for democratic growth in the region. He also called for a robust strategy to sustain regional security, particularly in light of the expiration of the ECOWAS Regional Action Plan on the Fight Against Terrorism.

Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, echoed these sentiments, acknowledging both progress and challenges as ECOWAS approaches its 50th anniversary. While celebrating achievements like the eradication of piracy in 2024 through collaborative maritime security operations, he warned against the risks posed by member-state withdrawals and emphasized a recommitment to democracy and good governance.

The session also addressed growing threats such as terrorism, organized crime, and disinformation campaigns. Leaders deliberated on the establishment of a Special Tribunal in The Gambia for prosecuting human rights violations and the operationalization of the ECOWAS Standby Force for rapid security responses.

Humanitarian crises were another focal point, with millions displaced due to food insecurity, climate-related disasters, and political instability. Both Tuggar and Touray stressed the need for National Early Warning and Response Centres and stronger measures against money laundering and terrorist financing.

As Tuggar declared the session open, he called for collective action to secure a prosperous future for West Africa. “Our unity as a region and strong partnerships with the global community have been the bedrock of our success,” he noted.

Dr. Touray proposed a “Summit of the Future” to address geopolitical challenges and reinforce ECOWAS’s identity and values, underscoring the importance of regional cohesion.

The 53rd MSC session stands as a critical milestone for ECOWAS, reaffirming its role as a beacon of peace, stability, and progress amid mounting regional and global complexities.
