Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Uyo Zonal Directorate, have arrested seven suspected internet fraudsters in Akwa Ibom State.
The suspects were picked up in the early hours of Monday, August 25, 2025, during a sting operation at Uyeh Heaven and Ayam Estates, located along Ring Road 3 in Uyo. The operation followed credible intelligence linking the individuals to alleged involvement in cybercrime activities.
According to the anti-graft agency, the suspects are believed to have been running online schemes targeting unsuspecting victims both within and outside Nigeria. Items recovered from them include five laptops, 10 mobile phones, and an iPad, which are now in EFCC custody for forensic analysis.
The EFCC stated that preliminary investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will face charges in court once the process is concluded.
The arrest forms part of the EFCC’s sustained crackdown on cybercrime, popularly known as “Yahoo Yahoo,” which has remained prevalent among young people in parts of the country. The agency has repeatedly cautioned youths against engaging in fraudulent online practices, stressing that it undermines Nigeria’s image and has dire legal consequences.
Only last month, the Uyo Zonal Directorate arrested several suspected internet fraudsters in different operations across Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, seizing luxury cars, laptops, and cash as exhibits.
The EFCC reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing all forms of financial and cybercrime in line with its mandate to safeguard the nation’s economy and protect citizens from fraudulent schemes.
