PDP NEC ratifies Damagum as chairman, zones 2027 presidential ticket to South

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, August 25, 2025, held its 102nd meeting in Abuja and took key decisions on the party’s leadership, zoning, and preparations for its forthcoming national convention.

In a communiqué presented by National Publicity Secretary Hon. Debo Ologunagba, NEC ratified the appointment of Ambassador Iliya Umar Damagum as substantive National Chairman of the party. Damagum will serve until the party’s elective national convention, scheduled for November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The committee also approved the report of the zoning committee, which maintained the current distribution of national offices between the North and South. Crucially, it resolved that with the chairmanship retained in the North, the PDP presidential ticket for the 2027 general election is zoned to the South.

NEC further directed the PDP Constitution Amendment Committee to circulate its draft proposals for wider party input ahead of the convention.

On national issues, the party condemned what it described as “state capture” by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the alleged militarization and manipulation of recent bye-elections in Kaduna, Taraba, and Zamfara States. It warned that such actions posed a threat to Nigeria’s democracy and risked pushing the country toward a one-party state.

The NEC reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to defending democracy, protecting citizens’ welfare, and repositioning itself to reclaim power in 2027. It adjourned its next meeting to October 15, 2025.
