EFCC recovers funds and assets in alleged $370,000 fake marriage case

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has made significant progress in the trial of Nwachi Chidozie Kingsley, who stands accused of defrauding an American national, Nicole Kierulff Sayers, of $370,000 through a purported marriage scheme. In a recent court proceeding held on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, Okanne Kelechi, the Second Prosecution Witness (PW2), provided crucial testimony before Justice U.P Kekemeke of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Maitama, Abuja.

According to Kelechi’s testimony, the EFCC has successfully recovered $13,204 in funds from the defendant, along with additional assets including a plot of land situated in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and two vehicles, a Lexus Ex 350 and a Toyota Venza.

During the proceedings, the prosecution counsel, Fatsuma Muhammad, led Kelechi through evidence demonstrating the defendant’s involvement in fraudulent activities. Kelechi highlighted various incriminating pieces of evidence, including fraudulent profiles on LinkedIn attributed to the defendant and a counterfeit contract award letter purportedly issued by the Federal government, which was sent to the American victim, Nicole Kierulff Sayers, via online communication channels.

Kelechi further elaborated on the investigative process, which involved inquiries with the Forensic Department of the EFCC, local banks, and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing. These inquiries revealed discrepancies in the authenticity of the contract award letter provided by the defendant. Additionally, evidence obtained from international money transfer operators corroborated the victim’s claims of financial transactions related to the fraudulent scheme.

In response to the mounting evidence, the defendant’s legal representation initiated discussions for a plea bargain. As a result of the ongoing investigation, the EFCC successfully recovered the aforementioned funds and assets from the defendant.

Justice U.P Kekemeke adjourned the trial proceedings to April 30, 2024, for further deliberations on the matter. Nwachi Chidozie Kingsley was initially apprehended by the EFCC on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, in Abuja, following allegations of entering into a false marriage with Nicole Kierulff Sayers and subsequently defrauding her of her savings.

The case underscores the EFCC’s commitment to combating financial crimes and seeking justice for victims of fraudulent activities. As legal proceedings continue, the recovered funds and assets represent a significant step towards holding accountable those engaged in deceptive and unlawful practices.
