The Federal Fire Service (FFS) has placed firefighters nationwide on red alert to prevent fire disasters during the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, emphasizing the need for heightened safety measures amid increased festive activities.
In a statement, the Controller General of the FFS, Engr. Abdulganiyu Jaji, also called for the installation of onboard cameras on fuel tankers and other vehicles transporting flammable materials. He stressed that such measures would enhance safety, prevent accidents, and protect lives and infrastructure, particularly during the high-traffic Eid period.
Jaji congratulated the Muslim community on the successful completion of Ramadan and urged citizens to take extra precautions while cooking during the festivities. He advised against leaving cooking unattended, storing gas cylinders indoors, or exposing children to fire hazards.
“All fire service commands and zones have been placed on high alert to ensure swift emergency response. Citizens should familiarize themselves with local fire service contact details for prompt intervention when needed,” Jaji stated.
Addressing road safety concerns, he lamented the continued use of substandard tankers on Nigerian highways, which contribute to frequent accidents and loss of life. He urged authorities to enforce modern safety standards, including anti-rollover systems, anti-spill devices, and onboard monitoring systems for fuel tankers.
“We are committed to advocating for improved tanker safety regulations. While replacing outdated fleets is a challenge, installing onboard computers to track speed, driver behavior, and night driving patterns can significantly enhance road safety,” Jaji added.
He further called for unity, love, and prayers for national peace and stability during the Eid celebrations, expressing optimism that improved safety measures would help prevent tragedies and promote a more secure environment for all Nigerians.
