FCT minister signs MoUs with Chinese Corporations for solar power and rural water supply projects

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has signed two significant memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and China Geo-Engineering Corporation Overseas Construction (CGCOC) Group.

These agreements, finalized on Saturday, September 7, 2024, in Beijing, China, are aimed at implementing solar-powered lighting across the FCT and enhancing rural water supply systems.

The MoU signing was part of Minister Wike’s official visit to China, accompanying President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

The FCT Minister highlighted that these initiatives are strategically timed to coincide with the celebration of Abuja’s 50th anniversary in 2025. According to Barr. Wike, the projects are expected to be completed within the stipulated timeline, significantly contributing to the infrastructural development and sustainability of the FCT.

Barr. Wike stressed that the collaboration with the Chinese corporations is a testament to the commitment of the FCT Administration to improve the quality of life for residents by addressing critical needs such as electricity and water supply. The solar power project aims to “light up” the FCT, providing a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solution that will reduce dependency on conventional power sources. This initiative is anticipated to enhance street lighting, improve security, and support business activities, especially in underserved and rural areas.

The rural water supply project, on the other hand, is set to tackle the longstanding challenges of water accessibility in remote communities within the FCT. By leveraging advanced technologies and expertise from the Chinese companies, the project aims to deliver a reliable and clean water supply to rural residents, thereby improving public health, agriculture, and overall living standards.

Minister Wike also noted that the projects were driven by President Tinubu’s advocacy at the FOCAC summit, where he underscored the importance of international cooperation in advancing Nigeria’s developmental goals. The President’s agenda includes fostering strategic partnerships that bring tangible benefits to Nigerians, particularly those residing in the capital territory.

“These projects are not just about infrastructure; they are about restoring hope and providing essential services that will improve the everyday lives of the people in the FCT,” Barr. Wike remarked. He further assured that the FCT Administration would work diligently to ensure that the projects are delivered on time and within budget, reflecting a commitment to transparency, efficiency, and the effective use of resources.

The agreements with CCECC and CGCOC represent a broader effort to harness foreign investment and expertise to drive growth and sustainability in the FCT. As Abuja prepares to mark its 50th anniversary, these projects are poised to leave a lasting legacy, aligning with the city’s vision of becoming a leading global capital that embodies innovation, resilience, and inclusiveness.
