The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening inter-agency collaboration, driving innovation, and advancing national development ahead of the African International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX) 2026.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, gave the assurance during a high-level meeting with organisers of AFRIDEX, led by Umar Alkali, who paid him a courtesy visit at his office in Abuja.
Describing AFRIDEX as a strategic initiative, the Minister stressed that sustainable progress within Nigeria’s defence and security architecture depends on robust collaboration rather than isolated institutional efforts. He underscored the importance of openness, synergy, and strategic partnerships in maximising national impact.
Tunji-Ojo commended the exhibition as a vital platform for showcasing both emerging and established innovators, particularly Nigerian youths excelling in digital and cybersecurity fields. He noted that amplifying such talents would enhance national pride, stimulate economic growth, and improve Nigeria’s global competitiveness.
Highlighting the role of research in national development, the Minister called for stronger integration between innovation and market opportunities, emphasising the need for platforms that connect innovators, manufacturers, and investors to unlock economic value.
He further advised that AFRIDEX be institutionalised as an annual event, acknowledging that while the inaugural edition may face challenges, it would provide critical lessons for future improvements. He also called for deeper collaboration among security and intelligence agencies, urging a shift away from “territorial thinking” toward collective progress.
Reaffirming the Ministry’s support, the Minister described AFRIDEX as a forward-looking initiative capable of attracting international participation and promoting indigenous industries. On visa facilitation, he recommended the establishment of a dedicated support desk to ensure seamless entry processes for foreign participants.
Earlier, Maj. Gen. Alkali expressed appreciation for the Minister’s continued support for capacity building and inter-agency cooperation. He formally introduced AFRIDEX 2026, scheduled to hold from October 26 to 29 at Eko Atlantic City.
The exhibition, organised with Federal Government backing and hosted by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, is expected to attract over 30,000 participants and 500 exhibitors from across the globe. It will showcase advanced solutions spanning land, air, maritime, space, and cyber domains.
Alkali also highlighted the Ministry of Interior’s critical role in ensuring the event’s success, particularly in security coordination and visa facilitation. He formally invited the Minister to participate and sought the Ministry’s support in promoting the event and mobilising its affiliated agencies.
The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to strategic partnership and a shared vision of positioning Nigeria as a global hub for defence innovation and security solutions.
