The Federal Government has called for deeper collaboration across Nigeria’s transport sectors to enhance safety standards nationwide.
According to Assistant Chief Information Officer Margaret Oyinboade, minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, made this call while representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB)’s Multimodal Transportation Stakeholders’ Workshop held on July 31, 2025, in Abuja.
The workshop, themed “Strengthening Transport Safety Standards through Collaboration,” brought together key industry players from the air, rail, marine, and road sectors.
Keyamo commended the NSIB, led by Captain Alex Badeh Jnr., for its expanding role as an independent investigative body under the NSIB Act of 2022. He praised the Bureau’s non-punitive, preventive approach to accident investigations and emphasized the importance of intermodal coordination to prevent future incidents.
In his opening remarks, Captain Badeh described the workshop as a platform for national dialogue and a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to global best practices in transport safety. He stressed that increasing interconnectivity between transport modes demands stronger collaboration among all stakeholders.
The workshop reviewed three key regulatory drafts:
-
Railway Accident Investigation Regulations, to establish clear procedures for rail mishap investigations.
-
Maritime Safety Investigation Regulations, to improve transparency and safety across Nigeria’s waterways.
-
Revised Civil Aviation Accident Investigation Regulations, incorporating global standards and emerging technologies.
Also speaking, Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, reaffirmed NIWA’s commitment to waterway safety. He outlined recent milestones, including the gazetting of a Water Transportation Code, deployment of over 20 watercraft and 600 marshals, and distribution of 6,000 lifejackets. He praised states such as Bayelsa, Niger, Kwara, Sokoto, and Lagos for embracing collaborative initiatives.
The event drew participation from high-level officials and experts, including former U.S. NTSB MD, Vice Admiral (Rtd.) Dele Ezeoba, and the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed.
