Zulum: Gwoza college of nursing to begin academic activities by year-end

  • Strengthens Community Resilience and Healthcare Capacity

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced that academic activities at the newly established College of Nursing in Gwoza will commence before the end of the year.

The announcement was made during the governor’s working visit to Gwoza on Friday, where he inspected completed and ongoing projects, including the Gwoza General Hospital and 500 housing units under construction in Wala.

Governor Zulum noted that an executive bill to formally establish Colleges of Nursing in Gwoza and Monguno is currently before the Borno State House of Assembly. “As soon as the bill is passed, I will immediately assent to it. It is my sincere hope that the College of Nursing will take off this year,” he stated.

The governor emphasized that the new institutions are part of his administration’s efforts to address the shortage of skilled healthcare workers across the state. He further directed the immediate recruitment of additional medical personnel—including doctors, nurses, and midwives—for the fully renovated Gwoza General Hospital, which will serve as a practical training facility for nursing students. “Without adequate human resources, the College cannot operate effectively,” he said.

In Wala, Governor Zulum inspected the construction of 500 housing units expected to be completed by the end of September.

As part of broader efforts to reinforce local resilience, the governor also visited Warabe community, where he donated operational vehicles and motorcycles to members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF). “The era of displacement is over. Communities must embrace resilience. The military, with Federal Government support, has deployed additional hardware to enhance local security,” he declared.

Governor Zulum was accompanied by Hon. Abdullahi Buba Abatcha, Member representing Gwoza; Hon. Mohammed Lawan Buba, Commissioner for Transport and Energy; Dr. Mairo Mandara, Chief Adviser on Sustainable Development, Partnerships and Humanitarian Support; along with APC stalwarts and other key stakeholders from the local government.
