FG issues flood alert for 15 states 

The Federal Government has issued a flood alert in 15 states across the country. The National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Center of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Abuja, has warned that heavy rainfall from June 21 to June 25, 2024, may lead to flooding in various locations.

he affected areas include: Adamawa State: Abba Kumbo, Demsa, Farkumo, Ganye, Gbajili, Jimeta, Mubi, Natubi, Shelleng, Song, Wuro- Bokki, Mayo- Belwa; Benue State: Agyo, Ugbokpo; Borno State: Maiduguri; Jigawa State: Hadejia; Kaduna State: Kauru; Kano State: Gezawa, Gwarzo, Kano, Karaye, Kunchi, Wudil; Katsina State: Daura, Jibia

Others are Kebbi State: Argungun, Bagudo, Bunza,Gwandu, Ribah, Sakaba, Shanga, Yelwa; Kogi State : Abejukolo, Omale,

Zugbe; Nasarawa State: Gidan Dogo, Keana, Lafia, Loko, Rukubi, Tunga, Udeni; Niger State: Magama; Plateau State: Langtang, Wase; Sokoto State: Gagawa ,Goronyo, Isa, Shagari, Silame, Sokoto, Wamakko; Taraba State : Bandawa, Donga, Kwata Kanawa, Lau, Ngaruwa, Yorro; and Zamfara State: Anka, Bukkuyum, Gummi.

In related news, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Environment, Mr. Mahmud Kambari, emphasized the need for safe and functional sanitary facilities and waste management materials across communities. Speaking at the National Environmental Sanitation Day in Piwoyi community, Abuja, with the theme “Go Green, Stay Clean, Climate Change is Real,” Kambari underscored the importance of these measures in combating infectious diseases.

Represented by Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health, Kambari urged the community to maintain regular cleanliness to prevent diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, and Lassa fever. Mr. Jonathan Daku from Breakthrough Action Nigeria and Dr. Edwin Edeh from the World Health Organization (WHO) echoed these sentiments, highlighting the role of hygiene in public health. WHO also pledged support for scaling up sanitation efforts nationwide.

The Esu of Piwoyi, Chief Tanko Bayago, thanked the Ministry of Environment and its partners for their initiatives and committed to ongoing sanitation awareness in the community. The event featured a visit to the Chief’s Palace, a community clean-up exercise, and the donation of cleaning materials.
