The House of Representatives has backed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in its recent warning about unauthorized websites collecting Nigerians’ personal data.
NIMC has denied allegations of data breaches, cautioning the public against providing personal information to several fraudulent websites, including:
- idfinder.com.ng
- Verify.Ng/signin
- championtech.com.ng
- trustyonline.com
- anyverify.com
- overify.kremtech.com.ng
These sites, labeled as data harvesters by NIMC, are not authorized to manage sensitive data. Only licensed partners can verify NINs through approved channels without storing NIN slips. NIMC reassures the public that strong measures are in place to protect the national database from cyber threats, with security forces working to apprehend fraudulent operators.
In a statemnt House Spokesman and Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr said the House is concerned about these scams, which it sees as attempts to undermine NIMC’s reforms. Rep. Jimi Odimayo, Chairman of the House Committee on Population, affirmed the House’s support for NIMC’s efforts to safeguard the National Identification Number (NIN) system and sensitive data.
“We recognize the importance of robust data security measures as a cornerstone of our national security,” stated Rep. Odimayo. “The House of Representatives stands firmly with NIMC in addressing these pressing issues and ensuring that our citizens’ data is protected from malicious actors.”
The House calls on the Office of the National Security Adviser and other security agencies to investigate these incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice. Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the House supports NIMC in upholding the highest standards of data security and privacy for all Nigerians.
