The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an immediate investigation into the feeding conditions of inmates at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar following allegations of inhumane treatment.
A video report circulating on Facebook claimed that inmates were being served poorly cooked beans as breakfast, prompting concerns about their welfare. In response, the Minister’s media aide, Babatunde Alao, issued a statement on Sunday expressing the Minister’s strong disapproval of the reported conditions and commitment to uncovering the truth.
“The Minister views this incident as a serious breach of the standards of care and dignity to which inmates are entitled,” Alao stated. “He has directed a comprehensive and urgent investigation into this matter, and those responsible will be held accountable.”
The Minister also emphasized that lapses in the quality of food, sanitation, and overall welfare of inmates will not be tolerated. The service is expected to uphold the dignity and respect of all individuals in custody.
“The Minister of Interior will not condone any form of mistreatment or neglect of individuals in custody,” the statement continued, noting that the findings of the investigation will be made public and appropriate disciplinary actions will be taken against those found culpable.
