Foreign Affairs Ministry mourns Ambassador Stephen Ogidan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the passing of Ambassador Stephen Ojo Ogidan, Director of the West African Affairs Division (WAAD), who died in Abuja on Saturday, September 27, 2025, after a brief illness.

Ambassador Ogidan, a seasoned diplomat with more than three decades of service, was widely respected for his intellect, strategic acumen, and commitment to advancing Nigeria’s interests within West Africa. He joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2007, following the merger of the defunct Ministry of Cooperation and Integration in Africa with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Over the course of his distinguished career, he held postings at the Consulate-General of Nigeria in Buea, Cameroon, and the Embassy of Nigeria in Lome, Togo, before rising to become Director of WAAD. In 2021, he was conferred with the title of Ambassador-in-situ by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In a statement, the Ministry described him as a “gentleman officer and true patriot” whose wisdom and dedication inspired colleagues and strengthened Nigeria’s regional diplomacy.

“His passing leaves a void that will be deeply felt, not only within the Ministry, but across the diplomatic community,” the statement read.

The Ministry extended condolences to his family, loved ones, and the Government and people of Edo State, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
