Fubara calls for unity as Rivers marks 59th anniversary

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace, unity, security and inclusive development as Rivers State marked its 59th anniversary on Wednesday.

In a goodwill message commemorating the anniversary, the governor said the people of the state had continued to demonstrate resilience, strength and unity despite the challenges encountered over the years since its creation.

Fubara described the enduring bond among the state’s diverse ethnic nationalities, including the Ijaw, Ikwerre, Ogoni, Etche, Ekpeye, Andoni and Kalabari peoples, as one of Rivers State’s greatest strengths and a foundation for peace, stability and progress.

He noted that the state had remained a major contributor to Nigeria’s economy, not only because of its vast oil and gas resources but also through the achievements of its citizens in academia, jurisprudence, business, entertainment, public service and sports.

The governor assured residents that his administration would continue to implement policies and programmes aimed at sustaining peace, safeguarding lives and property, and expanding development projects across all parts of the state.

According to him, governance must remain people-oriented, with equitable attention given to every local government area to ensure balanced development.

Fubara also paid tribute to the founding fathers and elders of the state for preserving the spirit of unity and coexistence, while urging young people to remain hopeful, responsible and committed to building a greater Rivers State through hard work, innovation and patriotism.

He further acknowledged the contributions of women in strengthening families and communities, describing them as critical partners in the state’s continued growth and stability.

Calling for renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence and collective progress, the governor urged Rivers people to use the anniversary celebration as an opportunity for reflection, dialogue and mutual respect.

“The unity and future of Rivers State must always rise above personal interests and political differences,” he stated.

Rivers State was created on May 27, 1967, by the administration of Yakubu Gowon following the creation of 12 states from Nigeria’s former regions, with the state carved out of the defunct Eastern Region.
