The Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has vehemently denounced the recent armed bank robbery that transpired in Otukpo, Benue State. This criminal incident resulted in the heart-wrenching loss of lives, both among the ranks of police officers and innocent civilians.
In an official statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer at Force Headquarters Abuja, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, it was unequivocally stated that this violent episode constitutes a grievous assault on the fundamental principles of peace, security, and justice that the Nigeria Police Force, along with other security agencies, vigorously endeavor to uphold.
The IGP extends his profound condolences to the grieving families and loved ones of the victims, who have been profoundly affected by this senseless eruption of violence. He duly noted that two of the suspects met their demise at the hands of diligent law enforcement operatives during an attempted escape. In his words, the perpetrators of this audacious act of criminality have indeed “murdered sleep,” as their actions have profoundly shaken the very core of the Otukpo community. He reassures the public that every available resource and effort will be dedicated to ensuring the swift arrest and prosecution of these individuals.
In response to this grave incident, the Nigeria Police Force has initiated a comprehensive and well-coordinated effort to bring the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice. The IGP has ordered the deployment of additional operational and investigative assets and resources to Otukpo, the Benue State Command, and surrounding states, all aimed at facilitating the swift apprehension of the remaining criminals responsible for this abhorrent act. This is in continuation of the earlier action that led to the elimination of two of the armed robbers during a pursuit on Friday.
In the same vein, in the wake of this incident and recognizing its significance, the IGP has placed all Commands and Formations on high alert. This is a crucial measure aimed at preventing any further deadly attacks on our institutions and the innocent citizens of Nigeria. The Otukpo attack serves as an early warning sign of the challenges typically associated with the Ember Months, characterized by bank robberies and other related crimes.
