The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has withdrawn its earlier invitation to Alhaji Lamido Sanusi in connection with the incident that disrupted public order in Kano State during the Sallah celebration on March 30, 2025.
In a statement Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the invitation was initially issued to obtain Alhaji Sanusi’s account of events that led to the breach of peace. However, in response to advice from key stakeholders and to prevent the politicization of policing actions, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed the Force Intelligence Department (FID) to visit Kano and obtain his statement instead.
Prior to the Eid festivities, intelligence gathered by the Police suggested that both disputed Emirs—Alhaji Ado Bayero and Alhaji Lamido Sanusi—planned to hold separate Durbar festivals, a traditional royal procession on horseback. To avert violence, the IGP deployed DIG Abubakar Sadiq, the Coordinating DIG for the North West, to mediate between the parties and the Kano State Government. A consensus was reached to suspend all Durbar activities and horseback processions.
Despite this agreement, Alhaji Sanusi, after attending Eid prayers in a vehicle, proceeded to lead a horseback procession accompanied by local vigilantes. This act reportedly incited unrest in the community, resulting in the death of one Usman Sagiru and injuries to several others—a scenario the Police had sought to prevent.
The NPF emphasizes its commitment to a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident. Arrests have already been made, and all individuals found culpable will face justice. The Force maintains that its actions remain grounded in professionalism, neutrality, and adherence to the rule of law.
