- Launches standard operating procedure handbook for safe school’s programme
The Acting Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has unveiled two significant measures aimed at enhancing security in Nigerian educational institutions, particularly for students’ safety.
According to Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the first measure is the establishment of the Schools Protection Squad (SPS), a specialized unit within the Nigeria Police Force dedicated to formulating policies and collaborating with relevant stakeholders to ensure the security and protection of students, teachers, and school infrastructure.
In addition to the SPS, the IGP will launch a comprehensive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) handbook for the Safe Schools Programme. The official launch and training event, scheduled for August 9, 2023, will involve 250 participants from various sectors, including the presidency, executive, judiciary, legislature, security agencies, civil society organizations, media, school administrators, unions, and other stakeholders.
The SOP handbook will provide guidelines and best practices for securing schools, conducting risk assessments, implementing emergency response protocols, and promoting collaboration among stakeholders. This valuable resource will empower educational authorities, security agencies, and other participants involved in the Safe Schools Programme to take coordinated and effective measures in safeguarding schools.
The IGP urges all relevant stakeholders to actively support and participate in these initiatives, as they are vital to ensuring the safety and well-being of educational assets in Nigeria. He believes that by working together with a unified approach, Nigeria can create a robust education system that guarantees a secure and conducive learning environment for every child.
