Israel has donated a first batch of ambulances, medical equipment and wheelchairs to Nigeria, in a move expected to strengthen emergency healthcare delivery and deepen the growing humanitarian partnership between both countries.
The consignment was handed over at the Port of Ashdod, Israel, where Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to Israel, Ambassador Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, received the items on behalf of the Nigerian Government.
The donation, facilitated by Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s national emergency medical and disaster-response organisation, includes fully equipped ambulances, medical devices and mobility aids.
The intervention comes barely three weeks after Ufochukwu assumed her diplomatic assignment in Israel following the presentation of her Letters of Credence to Israeli President Isaac Herzog on August 3.
Her appointment has coincided with renewed efforts by Nigeria to expand bilateral cooperation with Israel in healthcare, technology, innovation, agriculture, security and other strategic sectors.
Receiving the donation, Ufochukwu expressed Nigeria’s appreciation to the Israeli Government and Magen David Adom, describing the gesture as a significant demonstration of friendship and solidarity.
She said the equipment would support efforts to improve healthcare delivery and emergency response, particularly in communities where access to emergency transportation and medical infrastructure remains limited.
The ambassador also stressed that the significance of the initiative extended beyond the donated equipment, saying stronger health-sector cooperation could promote knowledge sharing, technology transfer, professional training and the development of more resilient emergency medical systems.
The donation comes as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen its emergency healthcare architecture amid pressure from road crashes, insecurity, disasters and other medical emergencies.
Properly equipped ambulances can provide more than transportation, serving as mobile treatment platforms where medical personnel can begin stabilising patients before they arrive at healthcare facilities.
The equipment is expected to be deployed to appropriate healthcare and emergency-response facilities in Nigeria to support patient care, emergency transportation and disaster-response operations.
Officials of Magen David Adom, representatives of the Israeli Ministry of Health and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission in Israel witnessed the handover.
Established in 1930, Magen David Adom serves as Israel’s national emergency medical, disaster-response and blood-service organisation, operating an extensive emergency response network.
The latest initiative places healthcare among the practical areas through which Nigeria and Israel are seeking to translate their longstanding diplomatic ties into tangible benefits for citizens.
The two countries have maintained diplomatic relations for decades, with cooperation spanning agriculture, water technology, security, innovation, education and trade. Under the new diplomatic leadership in Tel Aviv, healthcare and technology have emerged as key areas for expanded engagement.
Ufochukwu had earlier identified healthcare, trade and investment, agriculture and food security, technology and innovation, defence and security, as well as cultural and people-to-people exchanges as priorities for her tenure.
For Nigeria, the donation could provide a platform for broader collaboration with Israel in emergency medicine, medical technology, professional training and disaster preparedness.
Beyond the immediate humanitarian benefit, the initiative signals a shift from diplomatic goodwill towards practical cooperation, with life-saving equipment serving as a visible symbol of strengthening Nigeria-Israel relations.
