KACRAN calls for peace between farmers, herders

The Kulen Allah Cattle Rearers Association of Nigeria (KACRAN) has called for peaceful coexistence between farmers and pastoralists across the country ahead of the 2026 farming season, warning against actions capable of triggering renewed conflicts in rural communities.

In a communiqué issued after its 7th anniversary celebration and National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Damaturu, Yobe State, the association advised farmers against blocking cattle routes, encroaching on grazing reserves, or converting designated grazing areas into farmlands.

KACRAN also urged herders to avoid destruction of farmlands during livestock movement, stressing that disputes between farmers and pastoralists should be resolved through dialogue, negotiation and engagement with traditional rulers rather than violence or extrajudicial actions.

The communiqué, signed by KACRAN National President, Khalil Bello, followed a solidarity rally for peace and unity held at the Cultural Centre, Damaturu, on April 14, 2026, and a subsequent NEC meeting on April 15.

The association noted that both farmers and herders play vital roles in Nigeria’s food production system and must therefore conduct their activities lawfully and peacefully.

On the recurring issue of compensation for crop destruction caused by livestock, KACRAN called for fairness and moderation in the assessment of damages, stating that compensation should reflect the actual value of affected crops.

The association expressed concern over what it described as excessive compensation demands in some communities.

“We note with concern reports of excessive demands, such as ₦1 million for a single cow entering a farm, and urge reasonableness and fairness in such matters,” the communiqué stated.

As part of efforts to boost political participation among pastoral communities, KACRAN announced plans to embark on a nationwide sensitisation campaign to encourage pastoralists to participate in the ongoing electronic voter registration exercise ahead of the 2026 elections.

The association also commended the Federal Government for reforms in the livestock sector, particularly the establishment of the Presidential Livestock Reform Committee under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and co-chaired by Attahiru Jega, as well as the creation of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development headed by Dahiru Idi Maiha.

KACRAN further praised state governments that have established ministries dedicated to livestock development and urged others to adopt similar measures in the interest of food security and improved nutrition.

The association also commended the North East Development Commission (NEDC) for its livestock development interventions across the North East, alongside the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for supporting agricultural, fisheries and livestock modernization initiatives.

KACRAN equally applauded the L-PRES Project for converting motorized boreholes to solar-powered systems and constructing additional solar boreholes in Yobe State, describing the initiative as critical to addressing water scarcity among pastoral communities.

On insecurity and grazing infrastructure, the association appealed to federal and state governments to reclaim and revive grazing reserves and cattle routes nationwide, arguing that such measures would reduce long-distance cattle migration and minimise clashes arising from farm destruction.

The group warned that insecurity in parts of the North West and North Central regions continued to threaten farming and livestock activities, urging authorities to intensify efforts to protect lives and property.

According to the association, improved security remains essential to boosting food production for both domestic consumption and export.

KACRAN also renewed its call on the Federal Government to consider its proposed roadmap for tackling insecurity, expressing confidence that lasting peace could be achieved if the recommendations are fully implemented.
