Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has reaffirmed the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) firm control of the state despite ongoing rumours of defections.
Speaking at the party’s state congress in Jos on Saturday, the governor declared, “Plateau is PDP and PDP is Plateau,” emphasising that the party remains united and strong.
Mutfwang praised the peaceful and uncontested election of the new State Working Committee (SWC) as a testament to the maturity and cohesion within the party. “Since I joined the PDP, this is the first state congress to hold without contest,” he noted, adding that while disagreements are inevitable, commitment to unity remains paramount.
Addressing reports of mass defections, the governor dismissed them as exaggerated. “We only heard that some people have left; we have not seen them go with the crowd they claim to have. The day of reckoning is coming,” he said.
Highlighting his administration’s focus on development, Mutfwang disclosed that the State Executive Council recently approved over ₦100 billion for road construction projects across several local government areas.
The congress produced Raymond Dabo as chairman of the new SWC, alongside Gyang Tanko (Deputy Chairman), Michael Datok (Secretary), Felix Choji (Publicity Secretary), Panshak Dakyen (Legal Adviser), Lawal Abdul (Financial Secretary), Adams Alfred (Organising Secretary), Salomey Chollom (Women Leader), and Perpetal Buba (Youth Leader).
The event, attended by former ministers, lawmakers, party elders, and delegates from all 17 local government areas, was described by Electoral Committee Chair, David Umbugadu, as a “defining moment” for the PDP in Plateau.
Observers, including officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, commended the peaceful and transparent conduct of the congress, following similar outcomes in the preceding ward and local government congresses.
