NAF assures Igbokoda residents of environmental assessment after aircraft crash

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has assured residents of Igbokoda, Ondo State, of its commitment to addressing environmental concerns arising from an aircraft accident, following reports of an offensive odour and fears of possible environmental contamination in the affected community.

The Air Force said it was taking the concerns seriously and would work with relevant environmental, public health and other government agencies to assess the situation and implement appropriate measures after the ongoing search and recovery operations had been completed.

In a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the service acknowledged the anxiety, discomfort and uncertainty experienced by residents following the incident.

The NAF said it recognised the concerns expressed by the community, particularly reports of an offensive smell and apprehension over the potential environmental consequences of the aircraft crash.

It explained that search and recovery operations were still ongoing, with the Air Force working in coordination with partner agencies to ensure the safe and orderly recovery of the wreckage.

According to the statement, a comprehensive engagement with the appropriate environmental and public health authorities would follow the recovery exercise to determine the nature and extent of any environmental concerns and coordinate the necessary response.

The Air Force emphasised that the process would involve relevant stakeholders to ensure that any identified risks were addressed in the interest of public health, safety and environmental protection.

“The NAF remains concerned about the wellbeing of the affected community and is committed to constructive engagement with relevant stakeholders to ensure that appropriate measures are taken in the interest of public health, safety and environmental wellbeing,” the statement said.

The assurance comes amid concerns among residents over the possible effects of the accident on their immediate environment, particularly in view of reports of an offensive odour around the affected area.

Although the Air Force pledged to work with the relevant authorities, it did not disclose the source of the reported odour or confirm whether any environmental contamination had occurred.

The proposed post-recovery assessment is expected to help establish whether the incident has caused environmental or public health risks and determine the appropriate remedial measures, where necessary.

The NAF reiterated its commitment to engaging constructively with the Igbokoda community and relevant agencies, stressing that the wellbeing of residents remained an important consideration as recovery operations continued.
