The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully reconfigured four pre-owned fuel tankers into specialised aircraft refuelling bowsers, in a strategic move aimed at bolstering operational efficiency and enhancing mission readiness. The initiative, undertaken by the 643 Equipment Supply Depot in Lagos, aligns with the vision of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, to entrench a culture of proactive logistics, innovation, and self-reliance within the Service.
“These reconfigured bowsers represent more than just mobile refuelling capability—they symbolise our commitment to self-reliance and operational adaptability,” said Air Marshal Abubakar. “In today’s operational environment, speed and the sustainability of logistics are critical to mission success. The Nigerian Air Force must remain agile, innovative, and forward-thinking.”
The reconfigured bowsers are expected to play a pivotal role in sustaining air operations across various theatres, especially in counterterrorism efforts and joint military operations nationwide. By enabling rapid and reliable aircraft refuelling, the NAF aims to increase its persistent air presence, reduce aircraft turnaround time, and enhance combat effectiveness in dynamic and high-threat environments. “Asymmetric threats demand flexible and sustained responses,” the CAS added. “Logistics should no longer be seen as a support function relegated to the rear—it is now a frontline enabler of combat power.”

One of the bowsers has already been deployed to the 407 Air Combat Training Group in Kainji, with the remaining assets designated for deployment to other strategic locations across the country. The initiative is expected to significantly improve the NAF’s logistical capabilities, strengthen its operational footprint, and reaffirm its unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s national security.
This innovation highlights the Service’s broader effort to maximise available resources through creative engineering solutions while driving forward the CAS’s key priorities of operational readiness, infrastructure revitalisation, and strategic partnerships.
