The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially confirmed the successful restoration of voice and data services that were previously disrupted by undersea cable cuts.
In a statement released by Reuben Muoka, Director of Public Affairs at the NCC, it was affirmed that all affected operators swiftly utilized recovery capacity from unaffected submarine cables. This strategic action significantly expedited the restoration process, bringing services back to near-optimal levels.
Muoka emphasized that operators impacted by the cuts effectively leveraged recovery capacity from submarine cables unaffected by the incidents. As a result, approximately 90% of the peak utilization capacities have now been reinstated.
“Following the disruption on March 14, 2024, which affected data and voice services due to cuts in undersea fiber optics along the coasts of Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal, we are pleased to announce that services have now been restored to approximately 90% of their peak utilization capacities,” stated Muoka.
Additionally, Muoka highlighted the proactive measures taken by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), assuring the Commission of optimal data and voice service operations while awaiting full repairs of the undersea cables. MNOs have successfully activated alternative connectivities, mitigating disruptions and restoring normalcy to the situation.
Muoka extended gratitude to telecom consumers for their patience and understanding during the downtime caused by the undersea fiber cuts.
This development marks a significant milestone in the restoration of critical communication services, underscoring the resilience and collaborative efforts of all involved stakeholders.
