NEMA, World Bank, and GFDRR host 2022 flood lessons learned exercise

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the World Bank and the Global Facility for Disaster Risk Reduction (GFDRR), has orchestrated a two-day Lessons Learned Exercise (LLE) on the 2022 floods, scheduled for April 24th and 25th, 2024.

This significant gathering brings together key stakeholders, including State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMA), journalists, Faith-Based Organizations (FBOs), and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), to critically assess national emergency preparedness and response strategies.

The LLE comprises interactive sessions and workbook questionnaires meticulously designed to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the existing emergency management framework. It also aims to identify potential enhancements and opportunities for capacity building.

The workshop commenced with an inaugural address by the Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, represented by Dr. Onimode Bandele, the Director of Planning, Research, and Forecasting at NEMA HQ. In her remarks, the DG encouraged participants to leverage the workshop to delve into the country’s emergency systems, procedures, and experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of each agency’s perspective, capabilities, and role in response operations, drawing insights from the 2022 flood experience.

The overarching objective of the workshop is to facilitate stakeholders in sharing their experiences and insights on response mechanisms during and post the 2022 flood disaster, encompassing diverse viewpoints.

Prior to the national workshop, similar sessions were conducted in the six geopolitical zones, culminating in this comprehensive gathering.
