In his speech, Minister Lawal lamented the pervasive threat posed by climate change to ecosystems, livelihoods, and biodiversity, highlighting its disproportionate impact on marginalized communities and the perpetuation of social injustices through environmental degradation.
He underscored the urgent need for intensified efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, promote renewable energy solutions, and instill sustainable practices across all sectors. Minister Lawal emphasized the critical importance of mobilizing increased financial resources for environmental sustainability, advocating for innovative financing mechanisms such as Green Bonds, Carbon Pricing, and Public-Private Partnerships.
Furthermore, Minister Lawal urged council members to explore and implement financing mechanisms at their disposal, recognizing the pivotal role of these decisions in shaping the health and sustainability of the planet for future generations.

Acknowledging the pressing global challenges, Minister Lawal emphasized the paramount responsibility of environmental custodianship. He called for bold action to safeguard precious ecosystems from degradation and exploitation, stressing the urgency of the moment for addressing environmental issues.
In his welcome address, Minister of State for Environment, Dr. Iziaq Salako, echoed the commitment to mobilize funding for climate and environmental actions, emphasizing the importance of leveraging comparative advantages and nature-based solutions. He highlighted Nigeria’s initiatives, including the Ministerial Alliance for Ambition on Nature Finance, aimed at championing biodiversity finance and elevating Nigeria’s voice on global environmental platforms.
Mr. Koffy Kouacou Dominque, representing the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations, reiterated FAO’s commitment to supporting government efforts in sustainable natural resources management. He emphasized the importance of implementing climate commitments outlined in the National Determined Contribution document and pledged FAO’s continued support for accessing climate finance and mainstreaming agrifood systems into national biodiversity strategies.
In conclusion, it was recognized that urgent collaborative action is imperative to address the escalating pressures on the environment from climate change, deforestation, pollution, and other threats.
