NHRC condemns alleged police killing in Delta, demands accountability

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has strongly condemned the alleged extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, reportedly shot by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State, warning that law enforcement authority must not be abused to unlawfully take lives.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Tony Ojukwu, described the April 26 incident as “deeply disturbing” and a violation of constitutional rights and the rule of law.

Ojukwu stressed that no citizen should die at the hands of those entrusted with public safety, describing the conduct of the officer involved as “condemnable, unacceptable, and inconsistent with the principles of justice and a civilized society.”

The NHRC raised concerns over what it termed a growing pattern of excessive use of force by security personnel, urging the Nigeria Police Force to take urgent steps to address the trend.

The Commission called for systemic reforms, including mandatory psychological and mental fitness evaluations for officers, particularly those assigned to special duties, to ensure responsible handling of firearms and adherence to lawful engagement with civilians.

Ojukwu further demanded the immediate arrest and investigation of the officer implicated in the incident, alongside disciplinary measures in line with police regulations. He also urged authorities to implement recommendations from previous panels on police brutality, emphasizing that sustained reform is essential to preventing future abuses.

“The Commission demands immediate arrest, a transparent investigation, dismissal of the officer involved, and prompt prosecution in accordance with the law,” he said, adding that justice must include adequate compensation for the victim’s family.

He warned that delays in delivering justice could erode public trust in state institutions and weaken confidence in law enforcement.

Reaffirming its commitment to the protection of human rights, the NHRC said it would closely monitor the case while continuing to advocate accountability.

“Nigeria must never normalize brutality,” Ojukwu stated. “Justice must speak louder than silence.”
