NHRC mourns Arase, hails Ex-IGP as human rights champion

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Solomon Ehigiator Arase, describing him as a reformist and a staunch defender of human rights.

In a statement on Monday, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, conveyed condolences to Arase’s family, colleagues, and the Nigeria Police Force.

Ojukwu noted that as a visionary leader, Arase introduced transformative reforms in the police, particularly by prioritizing citizen-focused policing and human rights protection. He highlighted the establishment of the Complaint Response Unit as a landmark initiative that enhanced accountability and responsiveness to public grievances.

He further recalled Arase’s insistence on intelligence-led policing, which emphasized investigation before arrest and upheld the constitutional right to the presumption of innocence. This, Ojukwu said, sharply contrasted with current practices of arbitrary arrests.

Beyond his tenure as Inspector-General, Arase also advanced reforms as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, leaving his mark on modern policing in Nigeria.

“Arase’s legacy extends beyond his official roles. He was a revered member of the human rights community whose dedication to justice and dignity inspired both defenders and law enforcement officers,” Ojukwu said.

The NHRC praised his humility, intellect, and commitment to excellence, describing him as a man whose contributions to human rights and policing will remain indelible.
