Nigeria advocates Pan-African unity to address security challenges for sustainable development

The imperative for African nations to unite in combating the security threats plaguing the continent was underscored by Ambassador Musa Nuhu, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In his capacity as Chair of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC), Ambassador Nuhu emphasized the necessity for concerted action during his introductory remarks at a joint consultation meeting between the African Union (AU)’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) and the ECOWAS MSC at the ambassadorial level, convened in Abuja.

Highlighting the multifaceted nature of security challenges in Africa, Ambassador Nuhu stressed the urgent need for a unified response transcending national boundaries. He articulated, “The security landscape in Africa is dynamic, marked by evolving and intricate threats ranging from terrorism and violent extremism to unconstitutional changes of government. Addressing these challenges necessitates collective efforts that surpass individual national capacities.”

Moreover, Ambassador Nuhu underscored the significance of collaborative engagements between the AU and Regional Economic Communities (RECs) as pivotal platforms for fostering a cohesive response to mitigate security threats. He emphasized the pivotal role of such interactions in aligning strategies, enhancing preventive diplomacy, and formulating effective conflict resolution mechanisms, thereby ensuring regional peace and stability.

Furthermore, Ambassador Nuhu advocated for broadening the scope of AU-REC dialogue beyond political and security domains to encompass economic development, humanitarian intervention, social cohesion, and infrastructural advancement. Emphasizing these foundational pillars of good governance, he asserted their indispensable role in fostering a peaceful and stable Africa.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Jainaba Jagne, Permanent Representative of The Gambia to the AU and Chairperson of the Peace and Security Council, echoed concerns regarding the escalating presence of terrorist groups, violent extremists, and coup attempts in West Africa. Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, Ambassador Jagne highlighted the disproportionate impact of these threats on the region, as evidenced by the surge in coup-related suspensions within AU member states and the prevalence of terrorism and violent extremism.

Expressing dismay at the persistence of these challenges despite concerted efforts, Ambassador Jagne called for collaborative endeavors to reverse the prevailing trend. She emphasized the significance of the joint consultation meeting as an opportunity for both councils to deliberate on effective strategies for preventing and addressing unconstitutional changes of government and combating the proliferation of terrorist groups.

In conclusion, the joint consultation between the AU’s PSC and the ECOWAS MSC stands as a testament to the collective resolve of African nations to confront security challenges through unified action, underscoring the imperative of solidarity and cooperation in fostering peace, security, and sustainable development across the continent.
